Programme:

Talk 1: Advancing Knowledge Economies with Large Language Models: A Look into Falcon LLM and Noor

Abstract: This presentation examines the emergence and influence of large language models (LLMs) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The talk will focus on the capabilities of generative artificial intelligence (AI) models and discuss the development of a new LLM called “Falcon LLM,” which surpasses models such as BLOOM and GPT-3. Additionally, the development of Noor, the largest Arabic LLM model to date, similar to the ChatGPT model but using Arabic content, will be highlighted. The discussion will also emphasize the potential applications of LLMs in various sectors, including finance, healthcare, media, education, and energy. The significance of LLMs in advancing the UAE’s knowledge economy will be highlighted.

Speaker: Dr. Ebtesam Almazrouei is the Director and Co-Founder of the Al-Cross Center Unit at the Technology Innovation Institute (TII). Her work focuses on delivering AI and advanced tech solutions across multiple industries from healthcare, telecommunication, education, energy, security, etc. Dr. Ebtesam Almazrouei plays a pivotal role to build LLMs and step up the UAE’s capability in this space, led the team behind building Falcon LLM which significantly outperform models like BLOOM and GPT-3. Additionally, she led the development of Noor, the world’s largest Arabic large language model (LLM) model to date (like ChatGPT model but using Arabic content.

Talk 2: EMNLP 2022 in Abu Dhabi - Key takeaways

Abstract:

Me: I have to give a presentation on recent advances in natural language processing. Can you write an introduction for me, showing how important and challenging that domain is?

ChatGPT: Sure, here is a possible introduction for a presentation on recent advances in natural language processing: Natural language processing (NLP) is a field of computer science and linguistics that focuses on developing algorithms and models that can process and analyze human language. It is a rapidly growing field that is increasingly important for a wide range of applications, such as machine translation, dialogue systems, and information extraction. […] In this presentation, we will discuss some of the recent advances in NLP and the challenges that remain in this exciting field.

Speaker: Vincent Zoonekynd is a quantitative researcher in one of the largest sovereign wealth fund. Vincent holds a PhD in Mathematics from Université de Paris. During his career, Vincent worked as a quant for banks such as Goldman Sachs in Tokyo, and Deutsche Bank in Hong Kong. Vincent maintains an extensive blog on machine learning: http://zoonek.free.fr/blosxom/

Talk 3: Using Large Language Models in 10 Lines of Code

Abstract: Modern NLP models can be daunting: No more bag-of-words but complex neural network architectures, with billions of parameters. Engineers, financial analysts, entrepreneurs, and mere tinkerers, fear not! You can get started with as little as 10 lines of code.

Speaker: Gautier Marti is a quantitative trader. Before landing to Abu Dhabi, Gautier worked for hedge funds in Hong Kong, London, and Paris. Gautier holds a PhD in Computer Science (Machine Learning) from Ecole Polytechnique.
